Does converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. To make it transparent, use Remove background, which cuts out the subject and saves a transparent PNG.

PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression, while JPG throws away detail to save space. For photos, the PNG is usually much larger. Use it when you need lossless editing, not small files.

GIF can show at most 256 colors in each frame, so photos with smooth gradients or skin tones may look slightly banded or grainy. For full color, convert to PNG instead.
