How to remove background from image free, in your browser

What the background remover does
Cutting out a subject by hand used to mean tracing every edge for an hour. The Remove background tool does the hard part for you. An AI model finds the subject, keeps it and drops everything behind it. You get a clean cut-out for a slide, a product page or a new design. It works with JPG and PNG files, and it runs in your browser, so your images are not uploaded to a server.
The first time you use it, the AI model downloads to your device and your browser keeps a copy. That first run takes a little longer. After that, it starts much faster. If your browser can't run the model, the page tells you so and suggests browsers that can. A recent desktop or mobile browser is usually all you need.
How to remove a background, step by step
1. Open Remove background and click Select images, or drop your files onto the page. You can add up to three JPG or PNG images at a time, each up to 6 MB.
2. Under Subject, choose what the image shows: Person, Object or product, Logo or Signature. This tells the tool which method gives the cleanest edge.
3. Under Background, keep Transparent to get a PNG with no background. Or choose Colour and pick a swatch to place your subject on a solid color.
4. Optional: click Fix by hand to open the cut-out and clean up any spots the AI missed. There is more on this below.
5. Click Remove background, then click Download images. Transparent results save as PNG files, and results with a color background save as JPG files.
Pick the right subject
The Subject setting matters more than any other choice. Person is tuned for people, and it works well for pets too. It handles hair and soft edges better than a general model. Object or product is the better pick for things: shoes, mugs, furniture, plants, food and anything else sitting on a table or the floor. If a cut-out looks wrong, switch the subject and try again.
Logo and Signature work differently. They don't use the AI model, so there is nothing to download. Logo is for a logo, icon or clip art on white or one plain color: that color goes. Signature is for a signature photographed on paper: the ink stays and the paper goes. If Logo can't find a plain background around the edges, choose Person or Object or product instead.
Fix the edges by hand
No AI gets every photo right. A gap between an arm and a body may keep a patch of background, or a thin strap may disappear. Click Fix by hand to open the cut-out in an editor. Select an area, then choose Erase to remove it or Keep to bring it back. The editor shows removed areas, so you can see exactly what was cut.
There are two selection tools. Magic selects the spot you click plus nearby colors that look like it; raise Tolerance to grab more. Pen lets you click points around an area and drag to curve the line. Soften edges blurs the border of a selection so your fixes blend in. Undo and Redo work as you'd expect, and Undo all fixes takes you back to the AI result.
Tips for a cleaner cut-out
Start with a sharp photo where the subject stands out from what is behind it. Good light and some contrast help a lot. A dark coat against a dark wall is harder to separate than a dark coat against a light wall. Keep the whole subject in the frame, since cropped hands, feet or product corners can leave odd edges.
If your photo is a WEBP or HEIC file, convert it with Convert to JPG first, then come back. And if you need a set look, such as a white backdrop for a product listing, choose Colour under Background instead of Transparent. Your subject is placed on that color and saved as a JPG, ready for any site that won't accept transparent images.
