How to open WEBP files and convert WEBP to JPG

What is a WEBP file?

WEBP is an image format made for the web. It stores photos and graphics in smaller files than JPG or PNG, at a similar look. Like PNG, it supports transparency. Like GIF, it can hold simple animations. That mix makes it popular with websites that want their pages to load fast, especially on phones and slow connections.

The catch is support outside the browser. Browsers handle WEBP well, but some older programs, office documents, print services and upload forms still expect a JPG or PNG. That is usually when people first notice the format: a file they saved won't open, won't attach to a form, or gets rejected with an unsupported file type message.

Why your downloads end up as .webp

When you visit a page, your browser tells the site which image formats it can show. If WEBP is on that list, many sites send WEBP to save data. When you right-click an image and save it, you get exactly what was sent, so the file ends in .webp. This can happen even when the site owner uploaded a JPG, and even when the image address ends in .jpg.

How to open a WEBP file

On Windows: Windows 11 and most up-to-date Windows 10 PCs open WEBP files in the built-in photo viewer. Just double-click the file. If you see an error instead, right-click the file, choose Open with, and pick your web browser. Every modern browser can display WEBP, so this works even when nothing else does.

On a Mac: recent versions of macOS open WEBP files in the built-in image viewer. You can also select the file and press the space bar for a quick preview. On an older Mac that won't open it, drag the file into a browser window. The image shows up right away, and you can view it at full size.

On a phone: current versions of Android and iPhone show WEBP images in the gallery and in the browser. On phones, the trouble usually comes later, when an app or a website you are uploading to won't accept the file. Converting it to JPG solves that, and you can do it right in your phone's browser.

How to convert WEBP to JPG

1. Open Convert to JPG on the WEBP to JPG page and click Select images, or drop your .webp files onto the page. You can add many files at once.

2. Keep Recommended quality. It gives good quality and small files, and fits very large images to 2500 px on the longest side.

3. Click Convert images, then click Download converted images to save your new JPG files.

JPG can't store transparency, so any see-through areas in a WEBP are filled with white. For photos, that makes no difference. For logos and icons it does, which is where PNG comes in. Your files are converted in your browser and are not uploaded to a server, so there is no upload to wait for, even with a big batch.

When to choose PNG instead

If your WEBP is a logo, an icon or a graphic with a transparent background, convert it to PNG instead. Use the WEBP to PNG page in Convert to PNG. PNG keeps transparency, so the image still sits cleanly on any color. PNG files are larger than JPG for photos, so a simple rule works well: JPG for photos, PNG for graphics and anything see-through.
